Historical Lore
The soul of the landscape
The first historically confirmed intensive use of the North Sea was by the Romans in 12 BC. Using Roman naval support along the North Sea coast of Scotland, Gnaeus Julius Agricola continued the invasion northward into the Scottish Highlands. The Romans left behind remains of legions' temporary marching camps as far as the Moray Firth, evidence of coin hoards paid to local chieftains, and possibly the site of the great Battle of Mons Graupius, thought to have taken place around AD 83 near Bennachie.
