That water has been busy for millennia. It was once dry land — Doggerland — connecting Scotland to continental Europe until rising seas swallowed it around 6,500 BC. The Romans were the first to use it intensively, launching fleets into the North Sea from 12 BC and pushing their invasion northward along Scotland's coast. Then came the Vikings, using it as a jumping-off point for raids, invasions, and colonisation of Britain from 793 AD. WikipediaWikipedia
Later it became the engine of empire — protecting Britain from invasion for over a thousand years, while also serving as the springboard for its overseas expansion. In the 19th century it fed Scotland through the great herring boom, and in the 20th it transformed again with North Sea oil.
